How Do I Get It?

What is one thing you could change this week?

A wish becomes easier to act on when the next small step has an actual place in your week.

You may know exactly what you want and still find that nothing changes. The wish is there on Monday morning. By Friday, work and home have used every open patch of the week. It is easy to assume that you need a bigger plan. Often, you need a smaller next step with a time attached to it.

Say you want to make music again. You have a guitar in the corner, and every so often you think about picking it up. You tell yourself you will do it when life settles down. Life, being life, has not made that promise.

You could decide that on Thursday at seven you will spend twenty minutes playing. Put that time in your calendar. Seeing it beside other commitments makes the trade-off visible. If Thursday is crowded, choose a different day you can see clearly. The first step does not need to be impressive. It just needs to be possible.

Make room for one small attempt

Putting something in the calendar does not guarantee that it will happen. A child may need you, work may run late, or you may simply be tired. These things happen, and you can choose another day. A missed appointment can be moved. It is harder to try again when you have never chosen a day.

Keep the attempt close to what you wanted in the first place. If playing gives you pleasure, allow the twenty minutes to be about playing. You do not have to turn them into a course, a performance, or a new standard to meet. There is room to be a beginner again, even at something you once knew well.

The cost of a change is not always money. It may be the small discomfort of saying no to another task, or of treating your own time as real. That can feel unfamiliar. Still, a life shaped only by what is urgent leaves little space for what matters to you.

Choose one action that fits the week you have, rather than the perfect week you keep waiting for. Then give it a place. You can learn from what happens after that.

A question to carry

  1. What could you put in the calendar now?
